Wedge Corner Café
The Wedge Corner Café affords our pupils a vast range of opportunities to enhance their employability skills. Working in this environment allows them to meet new people, develop their skills in financial education, enhance their skills of communication and learn key requirements needed for the hospitality industry. This valuable experience can in turn build a pupil’s self-esteem and confidence.
The café also gives a wider range of pupils from across the school the opportunity to use the café, pay for items, wait for a receipt and check their change. We knew from consulting with parents that some families found it difficult to take their children to a café and enjoy real experiences, buying and paying for items. Having our own cafe on site, means that all of our pupils can use the cafe everyday if they want to and enhance their life skills.
Parents and pupils were consulted about what they would like to be sold in the cafe and pupils prepared questionnaires to determine how much individuals would pay for these items. A menu was then created by the pupils and members of the student council went with the Head Teacher to retail outlets to get an idea of the equipment they would need and how much it would cost. Once the café was constructed, the pupils were consulted with about the name for this facility and they came up with the name the Wedge Corner Café.
In order to recruit staff to work in the café, pupils from across the secondary department responded to an advert and through this were invited to fill in an application form. All of the pupils were then invited to a panel interview consisting of the Head Teacher, Assistant Head and School Business Manager. This process is repeated every year.
Alongside the set menu additional products are sometimes made to sell in the cafe in various lessons. These have included items such as insect hotels, seasonal decorations, wellington boot stands all designed and created by pupils working on an accredited course in the Wedge Workshop.
Pupils who are following a course in Meal Preparation and Planning also have the opportunity to make healthy snacks for the café as well as jams and preserves. Pupils in Business Enterprise lessons make products to sell in the café and seasonal products such as hanging baskets and fruit/vegetables are grown and provided by pupils following a course in Horticulture which are then also sold in the café.
The ‘Wedge Corner Café opened on Monday 15th June 2015 and continues to be a huge success! Parents/carers, staff and students were amazed at the quality of the café and the products sold. The refreshments were well received and very much enjoyed; “The quality of the coffee was great, I will definitely be coming back here again!”, “The products on sale made by the pupils are fantastic”, “The pupils were really impressive, their service was spot on”.
The café is open every morning and afternoon for parents and visitors from 8.30-9.45am and 2.45pm-3.15pm. Pupils who are on the morning shift also take pre-orders of snacks and drinks from staff. It is also open from 10-10.20am for pupils. The café has gone from strength to strength and is extremely busy at break times often with queues stretching out of the door. All profits from the Wedge Corner Café currently go back into the running of the café and into the products. Our plan is to widen our product range in the coming year.
