Gulson Road

Gulson Road is named after merchant and benefactor John Gulson (1813-1904), who founded Coventry’s public library service and served as Mayor of the city twice (1867/69). He donated the site and most of the money for the building of the Gulson Library adjacent to Holy Trinity church, which opened in 1873. Gulson Road was once home to the appropriately named Gulson Road Hospital. In Victorian times, Gulson Road Hospital started out as a workhouse and a poor-law infirmary, offering basic treatment to the destitute of Coventry. The hospital played a crucial role during the Coventry Blitz, as many of the survivors of the bombing were rushed to Gulson Road.

We cover the World War 2 Blitz in our curriculum.
