During the autumn term a few groups of Key Stage 5 students created their own stop frame animation. In previous years they had been given a theme and had assistance with the more tricky aspects of filming and editing.

This time it was different… They were given an iPad and shown how to use the “I can animate” app.

The students were split into groups of 3 and were tasked with coming up with their own idea for a short animation. Once they had come up with the idea they created a storyboard and collected/made the necessary props.

There were 4 teams creating a variety of animations; Subbuteo, Human Snakes & Ladders, Pool Trick Shots and a video for Pink’s song “True Love”.

The end results were all brilliant and entered into the Challenge IT competition. This competition was open to schools from across the Midlands with only 20 pieces of work being selected. 2 of our s (Subbuteo & Pool Trick) made it to the final.

On the day the Callum Bowen, Amanda Briscoe and Alex Clark represented Sherbourne Fields and had to set up a stand exhibiting their work. They were then questioned by judges about their animations. They answered all of the questions thrown at them before enjoying a huge buffet!

Finally it was time for the awards to be presented. The standard of competition was extremely high and our students were nervous, hoping they would win.

JD from Free Radio was presenting and he announced the runner up in our category…”Sherbourne Fields with Trick Shot.” Amanda (as 1 of the creators) went up to have her photograph taken and collect a certificate and goody bag.

Then JD announced the winner…”Sherbourne Fields with Subbuteo”. Callum almost sprinted to the front to claim his prize of a £25 WHSmiths voucher and a £100 cheque for the school.

Challenge IT was a great experience for the students involved, mixing with other students and talking to judges about their work, not to mention a great buffet and of course winning 1st and 2nd prize.
